Broad description/ rationale for the unit:

Fantasy is a powerful process of creating improbable scenarios using creative imagination, and is filled with ideals of courage, loyalty, and honor; ideas that sometimes seem lost in the realistic expectation of our world. Using fantasy as a big idea for teaching and learning allows multiple disciplines to engage variety of levels. Learning about fantasy both student and teacher can discover creative ways to problem solve. It can also help student to enhance their creativity through play, art making, even escape from reality. Exploring fantasy is an opportunity for learns to explore the unlimited possibilities of our imagination.

Description/ Rationale for Each of the 5 Lessons:

Lesson 1

This lesson is designed for children to learn to see the extraordinary in the ordinary and add fantasy into their selected daily object. Starts with introducing the picture book “If…” and other fantasy/ surrealist images. It is important to trigger students’ emotional excitement towards the lesson and make sure student is fluent in understanding the lesson. Then follows with class brainstorm activity to help student take a leap from crazy/innovative imagery exposure to understand the upcoming fantasy art project.

Lesson 2

This lesson is focused on exchanging ideas from peers and to establish students’ flexibility of understand of the fantasy concept that was introduced in the previous lesson. This lesson is to taking a deeper step into the fantasy concept and ideas by continuing the brainstorm list and let student sketch their ideas on paper while working with a partner.

Lesson 3

After the two previous fantasy exploration lesson, I will introduce the art project to the class and present student with exemplar artwork. This lesson is planned to encourage student to take what they learned in previous classes then combine their new knowledge with personal connections as a preparation of their project.

Lesson 4

During this lesson student will finally begin their art project. Students will learn to problem solve and elaborate everything they learned to create their original artwork.

Lesson 5

This is a critique lesson designed for students to discover what others like about their work of art as well as potential improvement that they can improved on. This lesson is important because through peer critiques, students learn to appreciate the diversity and richness of one another’s work and to enrich their own work.

Before and After Unit:

The before lesson will be over the practice of both realistic and abstracted technique of drawing still life using color pencil and water soluble color pencil. By learning and reviewing of basic technical skills student will be able to observe and notice the details of object that they use and see in a regular bases which most often are neglected from our attention. This lesson will consolidate what they already knew about observation drawing to ease their uncomfortableness of the later fantasy art project since they will be required to draw an ordinary object of their choice and combine the object with their imagination.

The after lesson will be a virtual “Classroom Museum exhibition”. This lesson is designed for student to learn how to use varies techniques to present/show their artwork in a way that will enhance the overall visual effect of the artworks. Each student will be given a space in the art classroom for them to practice their mini museum installation of all of their previous artworks. Students will be taking turns to be the exhibited artist and “museum” visitor. Lastly they will also be learning to hold a small presentation for their artworks to their peers. The lesson will be couple class periods in time and everyone will have a blast during the fun classroom exhibition and learn about this essential artwork presentation skill.
